Steps

  1. 1Combine a long wooden stick with rags
  2. 2Optionally add fat or fuel to extend burn time
  3. 3Ignite at a fireplace or with matches

Useful notes

  • Visible from a very long way at night — it makes you a target
  • Burns out over time; carry a spare
  • Can be used to light other fireplaces

Why it matters

Nights are genuinely black, and a torch beats hunting for a flashlight battery.
